Post by: Mosco on March 04, 2004, 05:37:34 AM
Hello,

Ok here is my problem, I cant ger .htaccess to work on my windows Xp server. I was told to put this code into my httpd.conf file,

<Directory /usr/local/www/mydomain.com/secure>
AuthType Basic
AuthName "Members Only"
AuthUserFile /usr/local/www/passwords
Require valid-user
</Directory>

But every time i edit my conf file and have this command in their
(AuthUserFile)

My apache says
Error
cannot perofrm the requested operation.

How about checking apache2\logs\error.log ? It could provide more info.

Have you granted access to the dir /usr/local/www/ ?

You might also want to read up on

http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/howto/auth.html

http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/mod/mod_auth.html

Have you uncommented...
"LoadModule auth_module modules/mod_auth.so"
...under httpd.conf?
'‘AuthUserFile’ needs that module loaded, and by default it is commented out.

You can create directory <drive>:\usr\local\www\ under Windows.  And some do use this structure under Windows to run a Web-Server.

Considering that Apache is working for this user, I would assume that he understands the dir path.  The error is a result of a missing loadmodule line.  Anything else would have resulted in many more problems.

Also, as long as the files are under the same drive that Apache is running under, no drive needs to be specified.

BTW, / and \ can be used under most config files with the same effect.

Additional note:

Everytime you make a change to the Apache "httpd.conf" file - you must restart the server - as per the directions provided for the new changes to take affect.

I just restart my computer, it seem to work fine.

And every time you restart your computer, all the Services (ex: Apache2) are restarted also.
