Title: Password Authentication with SSL problems
Post by: jc8458 on August 27, 2005, 04:21:44 PM
Can anyone help. I've been tearing my hair out over this for days!

I am trying to set up secure web access to my files. I have managed to successfully set up ssl and can browse my pages via https. However those directoreis that are password protected by .htaccess files no longer prompt me for a password when accessed by https. When I access the same directories through unsecure http the passwork prompt pops up. I am currently in the unsatifactory state of protecting those directories via unencrypted basic password authentication, or secure but unrestricted https. I want both.

My .htaccess looks like this

 AuthUserFile /var/www/html/.htpasswd
AuthGroupFile /dev/null
AuthName "By Invitation Only"
AuthType Basic

<Limit GET>
require valid-user
</Limit>

and the appropriate section of httpd.conf:

<Directory "/var/www/html">
        Options All
        Order allow,deny
        Allow from all
</Directory>

Thanks in advance for any help you can give

Jon.

Where is your AuthUserFile "..." field (under httpd.conf), and check its block.  Make sure to add it and the protected dir under ssl.conf also.
