How do I setup apache so that it will automattically goto the index.php or index.html.

I'm not sure if this is a setting at the virtual host level or at the apache level.

/ Upgrading to Tomcat 6
on: October 31, 2007, 08:46:31 PM
Has anyone attempted to upgrade from the version of Tomcat included in v1.94 of the Suite to Tomcat version 6?

I tried today and ran into a lot of problems.  I was able to upgrade Tomcat to the newest release of 5, but I could not get 6 to work.

Yes I went in and changed all my enviromental variables, and all the Tomcat conf server and user files.  But still it's not working any suggestions?

ok easy enough, i was woried that I may have to replace the ini and dll files in the system directory, then go back in and reconfigure the ini.

/ # of httpd instances
on: May 21, 2007, 05:30:02 PM
what's the normal amount of httpd.exe processes that run under a normal installation of the package?  I recently checked the task managers process list and it looks like I have 2 instances httpd.exe running.  Is this normal?

Also, what would cause multiple instances of the httpd.exe to show up?
8  DeveloperSide.NET / Feedback and Suggestions / Why did you remove Tomcat on: April 05, 2007, 05:58:42 PM
In your change log it say's that Tomcat will not be included in the new 1.95 Suite version.

What made you decide to remove this crucial piece of software?

One of the main reasons why I loved this suite was because it included tomcat and all the other necessary server software to run a full functioning web server.  However over the past few months I have noticed a lot of extra web software, not really needed to run a web server being bundled in the suite (for example Joomla, Drupal, phpBB ect).  I have delt with it, since it was disabled by default but I would have liked to have an option during install to not even put these on the drive.  I do one of the included web software packages (phpBB), but Id prefer to go out and get it myself instead of having it bundled in with the suite.  Especially since all the extra web software DB are now being pre-created.

Now with Tomcats exclusion in the most current suite, Im not sure if I will be upgrading any time soon.  (I know its not hard to go out and download Tomcat and mod_jk and install them manually myself, but it was so nice to have them included in the suite.)

I do respect and appreciate the work you are doing, but I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents.
9  DeveloperSide.NET / Feedback and Suggestions / Re: phpmailer on: March 05, 2007, 10:03:09 PM
im not to framilier with it just yet, but the way i use it, you have to have a seperate SMTP server running somewhere to forward your outgoing mail to, then it will send.  it's sort just sort of a middle man from PHP to your mailserver.

from what I understand PHP already includes a lot of the functionality of PHPMAILER, but PHPMAILER takes it to the next step and adds some functionality and features.  there are a lot of PHP programs that use PHPMAILER to send outgoing mail.  the one I needed to install PHPMAILER for was MANTIS.

when you mentioned those other programs im assuming you want full featured email server software and not just something to send outgoing mail from, is that correct?

I used zonealarm about 3 years ago and I would never use it again.

I ended up using Comodo firewall.

free and LOTS of settings to play around with.  Seems like it should be really secure.
13  DeveloperSide.NET / Tools of the Trade / Re: Share music from your site......Not really share but be able to play on: January 22, 2007, 04:54:46 PM
1.  Copy the file subsonic.war to <TOMCAT_HOME>/webapps
2.  Start or Restart Tomcat
3.  Point your web browser to http://localhost/subsonic (or http://localhost:8080/subsonic if you installed Tomcat on port 8080.)
4.  Logon with username admin and password admin. You should change the password immediately.
5.  Subsonic will attempt to create the directory c:\subsonic (on Windows) or /var/subsonic (all other platforms). This will fail if the user running Tomcat doesn't have the necessary privileges. In that case, create the directory manually, and make sure that Tomcat has write access to it.

here is the link where these instructions can be found
good luck

15  DeveloperSide.NET / Tools of the Trade / Software Firewall Recomendations on: January 18, 2007, 09:02:37 PM
can anyone recomend a good software firewall?  Currently using the last version of Sygate they released, but I'm thinking it maybe abit out dated now.

this is for a home\small office setting.

I have a home router that includes a firewall, but I have always doubled up with a software firewall too.  however I have heard that you don't need a software firewall in this case.  any opinions on this topic?
