what way (manual or self installer) do you recomend for upgrading PHP to the latest version?

Download the latest php5.2 zip file from php.net
Stop Apache2.2 Service.
Rename C:\www\php5 to php5.2.1
Extract php5.2.2 from zip. Move to C:\www. Rename to php5.
Start Apache2.2 Service.

ok easy enough, i was woried that I may have to replace the ini and dll files in the system directory, then go back in and reconfigure the ini.

You can do just about the same with all the other components. Just not Apache, but everything else...
