Straightforward SETUP
Problem

I am using your DeveloperSide.NET Web-Server SSL-enabled Package, version 1.06s Released October 12, 2003 to set up a local web server to learn PHP.  I had the Apache 2 running once tonight, but removed it. I got that Apache from another site and had problems at some point, not sure when, too tired to note the exact failure..  I found the excellent instructions you have put on web site and "think" i have followed them to a "T" except for some case sensitive text and the dir "c:/windows" instead of "c:/WINNT". Apache shows up as a service but will not start when I enter apache -k start...... I have looked at this for hours and no luck with several uninstalls and reinstalls...ack.

Following is a previous post which I am cannabalizing a bit.

"""""""""It is, if you followed the instuctions. Out of the last 5000 downloads, only about 10 people had problems, and each problem was a result of not updating the $PATH and rebooting or running firewalls/anti-virus software that blocks apache from starting.

look into /www/apache2/logs/error.log
what does it say? "Nothing"

Did you add everything to the PATH?
what does 'set' give up, under the command line? Is this case sensitive ? If, not then I have added to PATH by cut and paste from Readme 1st.txt, and replaced <drive:> with c: which is where /www resides.

Do you have msvcr70.dll under /winnt/system32? It is under c:/windows/system32 which is the directory i have - no WINNT ..would this affect program ?

Are you running any firewall or anti-virus software? no

From what you said, that sounds allot like a problem with the PATH. Either that, or you did this without a reboot after you updated the PATH. If I were to take a guess, I would say it was a missing reboot.

I rebooted...
Screenshots are here of text etc. pls take a look ..

apache 1.3 works, but 2.0 does not- ended up installing both from Apache site - but whenever I try to start 2.0 I get and error that operation has failed...

this is so d@mn frustrating.

My apologies for being slow at this stuff, I am a solo person, more graphics oriented than programming.... My brain gets jumbled when looking at this stuff hehe.  I am just wanting to set up a phpbbs without getting proficient at server scripting or that type of thing. With that said.

"even a blind dog finds a nut sometimes"

I figured out that you have to open error log when you try to start Apache and it hangs, I had been closing the cmd.exe window so I guess it erases the error.log when that is closed.  SO, I now have an error.log which is pasted below..........

[Sat Feb 03 14:07:28 2004] [notice] Parent: Created child process 4552
[Sat Feb 03 14:07:28 2004] [notice] Child 4552: Child process is running
[Sat Feb 03 14:07:28 2004] [notice] Child 4552: Acquired the start mutex.
[Sat Feb 03 14:07:28 2004] [notice] Child 4552: Starting 250 worker threads.

I am not seeing an error here, but that doesn't mean much.

FYI
http://forums.devshed.com/t41220/s.html had good info on my issue.
This is basically what i am experiencing now...

OK... So are you running Win95, or Win98?  Or did you do a "upgrade" to 2000/XP?

And what is exactly the error msg, the output message on the command line, when you type 'apache -k install' and 'apache -k start'.

From that link you posted, they are having problems loading up PHP....Did you copy php.ini and my.ini to the appropriate dir? Where?
