I am not sure if mysql server is runing. when i type the mysqladmin status
command, i have following respond.

C:\www\mysql\bin>mysqladmin status
mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (10061)'
Check that mysqld is running on localhost and that the port is 3306.
You can check this by doing 'telnet localhost 3306'

then i type telnet localhost 3306, i have respond showing below

C:\www\mysql\bin>telnet localhost 3306
Connecting To localhost...Could not open a connection to host on port 3306 : Connect failed

because of i have firewall installed in my local PC, i thought that maybe the reason why i can not connect to the server, so i disable the firewall. when i re-type the same command again, i get the following respond

C:\www\mysql\bin>mysqladmin status
mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user: 'ODBC@localhost' (Using password: NO)'

C:\www\mysql\bin>mysql
ERROR 2003: Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (10061)

C:\www\mysql\bin>telnet localhost 3306
Connection to host lost.

i also try other commands

C:\>netstat -an

C:\>net start MySQL
The requested service has already been started.

More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 2182.

C:\www\mysql\bin>mysql
ERROR 1045: Access denied for user: 'ODBC@localhost' (Using password: NO)

could anyone give me some idea of what's wrong with it, or do i need to change
some setting in the configuration file? (since i installed the web suite, i have
not alter any setting in mysql configuration file)

By the way, I have no old mysql installed into my computer, and where do I find the MySQL error log?

thanks for your time.

What OS/service pack do you have?

What firewall do you have?

If you read the thread "solutions to most common problems" (at the top), you will find the location of mysql's error log.  Make sure you are not running any of the software listed.

All the mysql commands, you need to type with a '-u root' at the end.

I assume you did not set the password for user 'root', you are accessing MySQL from the same system that MySQL is installed on, and you have not done any modifications?

Have you configured your router to pass port "3306"?

thanks for your replay

my os is windows 2000 prof. with service pack 4
the firewall is inside the Norton internet security.

Yes, i did not set the password for user 'root', i am accessing MySQL from the same system that MySQL is installed on, and i have not done any modifications.

Do i still need to configure my router to pass port 3306 even i access mysql from the same system that MySQL is installed on?

i still don't understand why when i enter the command "net start MySQL"
i get the respond "The requested service has already been started".
But when i enter the command "mysqladmin status" in c:\www\mysql\bin\>. i get
mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (10061)'
Check that mysqld is running on localhost and that the port is 3306.
You can check this by doing 'telnet localhost 3306'

Uninstall the firewall, sometimes just stoping it will not work.

Check Services, make sure no instance of the firewall program is present.

Forward port 3306 under your router.

And when you type any mysql commands, do so with an '-u root' at the end.

should i first telnet to mysql server then issue the command? or there is another way to do that?
